Chairman’s Cup match 20/11/10
Ladybridge Lightning 2 – 2 Jets
(Penalties 3-1)
The Jets went out the cup on penalties, in another game they should have won.
For the first 10-15 minutes of the first half the Jets looked asleep, whether it was the early kick-off at 9, or the cold, who knows? There were 3 pitches close together and they conceded 2 goals in the same way shortly after each other, when they stopped playing on hearing a loud whistle from the Referee on the adjacent pitch. After that they seemed to come alive, Aaron got a penalty after being brought down in front of goal. It was placed very far out, but he struck it well, just hitting the post and Ladybridge got to the rebound first. Then Liam got the Jets first goal after a good pass from Ted. Adam L scored the equaliser before half time, finishing a good ball in from Adam B.
In the second half the Jets dominated the play, but could not break down the Ladybridge defence, several decisions for corners being given against them. Typical of their efforts was an Adam B free kick from half way (after Aaron had gone off injured, having been stood on the neck) the keeper saved the shot punching it out, it landed for James who struck it well, but it was blocked by a Ladybridge defender, that block fell for Ted who shot, for it to be blocked by two Ladybridge defenders.
In extra time the Jets dominated again, looking like the only side that could win it, but it ended with no further score, both periods being blown-up on Jets breaks.
It then went to penalties, Adam B scoring his well, Nathan put his over the bar, Liam’s was saved against the bar and Adam L’s was saved. Ladybridge scored their first 2, missed 1 and scored their fourth, Oliver having no chance. The fifth penalty was not required.
Scorers: Liam, 1; Adam L, 1
Penalties: Adam B, 1
